About the Instructors

Guan-Cheng Sun

Dr. Guan-Cheng Sun originally learned a Qigong system from his grandfather at age nine. Dr. Sun has spent over 25 years refining his skills and has developed a new system called Yi Ren® Qigong.

After earning his Ph.D. in molecular biology from the Graduate University for Advanced Studies in Japan in 1993, Dr. Sun was awarded a fellowship from the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science. During his years in Japan, he also began teaching his Qigong system. In June 1994, Dr. Sun came to the University of Washington where he continued his research of the endocrine system at the molecular level. This research into the hormonal balance and transformation of the body has enriched Dr. Sun’s theory and practice of Qigong. He brings warmth and compassion into the classroom, in addition to his rigorous scientific background.

Lucy Baker

Lucy Baker has been studying Yi Ren® Qigong since 1996. Assisting and then teaching beginning classes in the past five years have given her a unique position to observe students discover the transformative powers of this Qigong style. Lucy is an accomplished health care provider and licensed massage practitioner. The skills and knowledge gained in health care enable her to not only understand and experience the depth of this energetic practice for self healing and personal growth, but also share this process with her students. She has been in private practice for sixteen years as a massage practitioner. During that time she was one of a handful of practitioners in Washington state selected to participate, as therapists, in two research projects sponsored by Group Health Cooperative to demonstrate the effectiveness of massage for low back pain. Her natural interest in education has led her to complete an additional 1200 hours in advanced massage techniques which include Jin Shin Do, Muscle Energy Technique, Positional Muscle Release and Lymphatic Drainage. As a result of her additional studies, she is classified as a medical massage practitioner. She graduated with a Liberal Arts Degree in History. She has worked as a teacher, interviewer for the Bureau of the Census, health food store owner, floral designer, customs house broker and entrepreneur. Having such a variety of life experiences contributes to her ability to relate with her students. She finds being able to share this simple, yet elegant practice very rewarding.

Henry Yu

Henry Yu started his Qi work when he signed up for a Taijiquan (Tai Chi Chuan) class in 1991. As his understanding of internal energy deepened through disciplined practice and then teaching of Taijiquan, Henry became interested in finding out the way of Qi and started studying the system of Yi Ren® Qigong with Dr. Sun in 1998. After practicing Yi Ren® Qigong and enjoying the benefits from the system, Henry began teaching beginning classes in 2002. Sue Reed

Sue Reed has been supporting integration of the body/mind/spirit for over 11 years as a Nationally Certified/State Licensed Massage Practitioner, and is a provider for several major insurance companies. She is currently in her ninth year of private practice in West Seattle. Sue was first introduced to Qigong in 1994 during her massage school education in Santa Fe, NM, and began to focus specifically on Yi Ren® Qigong in 2001. She looks forward to sharing tools for living and interacting with our whole being, and “feeding” on the abundance of life. Sue’s teaching and personal practice is inspired by this quote of Kwan Tzu. “If you give a man a fish, he will have a single meal. If you teach him to fish, he will eat all his life.”

David Sinclair

In December of 2005 David was introduced to Yi Ren® Qigong and the Institute of Qigong and Internal Alternative Medicine (IQ&IAM). Yi Ren® Qigong is a most excellent fit to his chosen direction of growth. In addition, Yi Ren® Qigong seemed to not only promise great health but it is additionally based on a deep understanding of bio-energy. In June of 2006 David committed to pursue teacher training with the IQ&IAM to introduce the “internal exercise” of Yi Ren® Qigong to others and share its health benefits.

As a pre-teen, David was introduced to health and nutrition by his father, who was aware of the benefits of natural organic foods as early as the 1940s. After 20 years of a typical American diet, David experienced loss of energy and other health issues, although exercising regularly. He returned to natural foods and made a lifetime commitment to a life extension/anti-aging “experiment” on himself.

The “experiment” emphasized organic foods, metabolic balancing, and a better mix of physical exercise, Kundalini yoga, and meditation. In early 2005 he began his first in-depth introduction to the world of bio-energy with LifeWave LLC and its bio-energy based energy enhancing technology.

In 1971 he earned a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Washington State University, and an M.S. in Systems Management from the University of Southern California in 1974. David began his profession in mechanical engineering and project management at Fort Lewis and McChord AFB until retiring in 2004.

Ta Deng

Ta is a molecular biologist and an avid Qigong practitioner. He started to learn various styles of Qigong and Taiji from 1983 in Beijing. By 1994, he met Dr. Sun in Seattle and was immediately amazed by the power and effectiveness of Yi Ren® Qigong system and became one of Dr. Sun’s first group of students in USA. For Ta, Yi Ren® Qigong is one of the better practices which combine the traditional Chinese Qigong theory with current understanding of life science. Being a Yi Ren® Qigong instructor with years’ study and practice, Ta would like to share his knowledge and understanding on how to heal disease and make yourself stronger mentally and physically through Qigong practice, how to make your daily life more fulfilling and rewarding by applying Qigong principles (and oriental philosophy) to it.

Sylvia Nogaki

Sylvia Nogaki studied meditation and hatha yoga for many years but was forced to quit most activities due to a catastrophic illness. She looks forward to sharing with you the self-healing tools offered by this wonderful practice of Qigong.

Brendan Thorson

Prior to studying Yi Ren® Qigong, Brendan Thorson LMP invested many ineffective years studying meditation, yoga, tai chi and other forms of qigong in an effort to resurrect his exhausted body and mind. Then, in 1999, during his first class with Dr. Sun, he felt his heart being touched, his nervous system being nourished, and mental clarity. Brendan knew from this first class that he had finally found his teacher and that he wanted to share these remarkable studies/trainings with others. Brendan transformed his life with Yi Ren® Qigong and is a full time Yi Ren® Qigong and tai chi instructor. The struggles he experienced with his life, health and personal transformation have enhanced his capacity to connect with students at their individual levels. Mark Wigzell

Throughout his life Mark searched for a path to spiritual awareness and development. In 2003 he began studying Yi Ren® Qigong and Taijiquan in an effort to alter the course of his life. From the first Qigong class he was able to feel his own energy field, and this primary experience became the basis and inspiration for developing a daily self-cultivation practice. His life has become more meaningful and his health and emotional well-being continue to increase.

In the fall of 2007 Mark was an assistant instructor in Dr. Sun's pilot research project, "Effects of Qigong on Glucose Control in Type 2 Diabetes," and he continued to lead a group of former study participants in a weekly practice until December 2009.

Mark wishes to share his understanding of Qigong and inspire others to find their path to health and spiritual self-cultivation.
